Conservatives Crush Humanities

Give the money to business students, for only business is worth the support of the government.
Humanity be damned by business.

I wish I could write more tonight, but I have a huge hate on for a few things and feel that it's best to just keep quiet.

Beach,

How I miss our time together.
It's been too long since I've felt your touch.
I miss the moments I spent alone in your beauty.
I'll return to you soon.
You'll always have my heart.

Yours Truly,

Andrew

Frustration Manifest

Delay of action results in time lost.
I wish that I had taken the initiative to stand up for my intentions earlier.
Live and learn, and I am learning.
I am now standing up for my objectives.

MADT Fest Reception.
I feel that my project has been a ?success?
Even though I have no finished piece of music, as of yet, I have gathered a series of recordings and made connections to individuals intent on production in the future.
Travers is very interested in the process and hopefully will become someone to produce music with.
I will track more recordings tomorrow and will take a moment to iron out a foundation for a final track.

My head hurts.
I feel very disheartened.
I had a great meeting a couple days ago, and have had strong and positive reception to ideas I have brought forth to numerous individuals, but I feel very deflated.
My health probably plays a large role in this feeling.
Diet.
Sleep.
Exercise.
{lack of these things}
Time must also be a large factor.

I am in a ritual period of transition.
A liminal period.

My biggest question at the moment is:
What is success?
How can one's learning be truly evaluated?
Why does grading feel so degrading?
What happens when success is dependent upon the failure of the old evaluation system?

Kara brought up a point of wonder yesterday.
Why focus on the "great white men" and the ideas they had, when you're looking to actually focus on improving the quality of life that was destroyed due to their ideas?
These "great men" perpetuated ideals that enslave many, negated equality and are being taught as a model to emulate.

Time to redraw the map to my ?success? for I seem to have lost touch with my practice.

Missed Yesterday's Events?

It seems that yesterday has fallen away from the blogosphere and now today is fast approaching the same.
Meetings have occurred and decisions have been made.
First Year Studies proves to be an interesting realm of education.
I held a department meeting....
one student showed up out of more than 300.
Apathy or Fear?
I have been talking to the Student's Association, faculty, and administration to find ways to fill the cracks in the system.
There are great minds abound, we must now come together to create great solutions.

I have recorded some sounds for my installation and look forward to the opening reception tomorrow.

There are lots more things to dive into....
but due to having even more things I must do, I will save my time and leave you out of the loop.
Spend time recording what I have done or do more?
Do More!!!

"are you following it?"

Ultrasound shows....
boy.
Kar' was a little let down, she was hoping for a girl; she's excited now though.
The whole experience was beyond real.
A 4d ultrasound.
We got some video of the little guy hiding in the womb.
Camera shy.
We only got to see the side of his face.
Here's a video of him all turned away.

The video shows him moving and shows the layers of his being.
Spine, ribs, pelvis, and more.
Now to find a name we agree on.
I like Ashen.
Kara likes Felix.

Missed the morning class of 315.
Missing class sucks.
You pay to learn cool stuff and when you're not there to learn it you feel behind the ball.
ALORK (ACAD Laptop Orchestra a.k.a Adam's Laptop Orchestra) played in the afternoon, that's the 315 class, and we're developing a little bit.
We need to spend a bit of time out of class getting to know each other's sound and style.
Wireless network playing allowed for the Lemur to be our master controller of volume; it essentially turned the members into notes/instruments that one could play all dj style.
I'm excited to see where this all goes.

Greg came and jammed in my Me & You installation after class.
We swapped playing drums and bass.
It was nice to jam with someone.... it's been way too long.
He's excited to jam again tomorrow.
Stu was a major help in providing some extras and making the room more noise productive.
I think he finds the whole thing exciting, almost like a studio is in the school.
Tomorrow, I'll finish getting the last bits ironed out and will be sure to start recording contributions for the final product; I still have a couple things left to tweak in the setup for audio capture and then it will be all solid sound bank creation.
Caitlind stopped by and snapped some photos.
I had Live looping some music I made for 315 while I played along on the drums.
I haven't played the skins in so long.
I felt rusty.
Hopefully Damian brings his electric bass and we can get some real oomph going.
I have to make posters and an email call.
I'm going to promote the isht outta the thing!

Volunteer!
Do it!
It helps the community and provides great life experience.

Me & You

Installation Setup.
Making others make music.
To have people make sound I'll be filling a room with a drum set, percussion pieces, bass, guitar, recorder, trumpet, harmonica, and more.
Finding "found sound" is going to be encouraged.
I'll be using the sounds that others create as a sound bank for creating new music.
There will be instruction in recording, mixing and creating music digitally.
I hope that people get involved.

Have to find a bit more time to work on some visual art.
Too far from creating lately.

Ultrasound tomorrow!

216 : Design Frustration

Today was a bit rough.
I found my brain working slowly.

Modeling was a bit beyond me this morning and it wasn't until the last 30 mins of working with Rhino that I felt solid.
At least I could notice a progression.

Worked on the SD house vector for branding.
Hopefully, it foots the bill.
I've put up 5 options for the back of the business card on base camp.
These little tasks are very time consuming.
Shooting textures, tweaking designs, writing requests for others to participate.
Working on this style house with an established firm would be so much smoother.
Professionals are still learning, but they are far beyond where students are at.

Worked on some layers for Credence.
Practiced a bit of guitar for the treble end.
I'll lay something down soon.
I have to setup to record in the basement.
I'm thinking about finding foam and making an anechoic chamber.
I need something to kill the noise floor.
Hopefully I can find a source of funds to get Bias Peak Pro XT, and complete my audio suite; of course one will always expand, but this will concrete the ground level for production.

I'm off to enjoy what little time I have left in the day with the woman I love.
I long for steady pay at a rewarding job and time for the family.
Lots of quality time with Kar' and Baby.
Soon, I hope.

CIFF

Volunteering has it's rewards.
I went postering and enjoyed the pleasure of getting out and about in Kensington in beautiful weather.
Putting up posters made for a solid excuse to take a walk and see what other events are up and coming.
Kar' and I quite enjoyed the stroll.*
Free entry to see Blood Trail is also a huge bonus.
Richard King.
Crazy Lifestyle.
I am very interested in "War Art" and have thought many times on conflict photography.
The trailer leaves a person....
feeling taken aback.

Rhino for Mac.
A little different and still in Beta testing.
Some neat aspects that take a little getting used to, and you have to route through some menus to find how to do things again.
I'm curious to see how it develops.
It's missing some functionality at the moment.

Vicky Christina Barcelona.
Weird flick.
The narration was almost comical.
I like how it was "off the wall."
I was anticipating something a bit more polished.

Back to class tomorrow.
Reading week is over?
Bummer.

I found some good literature for my Material Culture paper.
I'll be heading to the U of C library on Monday to grab a few things and take notes.
Lots of good info online as well.
The Classroom.
I'll be analyzing what it is and the concept of it materialistically.
There is an article from the International Journal of Mobile Learning Organization that looks helpful in illustrating the wall-less classroom and what makes a classroom so, in the field.
I'm finding this research very rewarding in my quest to evolve our education system.

Class tomorrow and Kara awaits me to grill me about my interest in war photography.
She seems to think that since I find it fascinating, I'll be running out to partake in it; swimming in the Olympics looks cool too.

*stopped in Pages and found some books I have not seen yet.
I hate when books you're interested in are wrapped in plastic.
I think I'll go back and persuade Pages to pull a couple out of the wrapping.
How can a person spend close to a hundred dollars on a book and not have seen a single page?

Time Wave Zero : Terence McKenna

Novelty Theory.
The Tutankhamun Prophecies.
Spiral Conception.
I'm excited to pass the "end date."

Friends and distraction lead to mental expansion.
New views on the same issue.
We always need another mind to bounce ideas between.

Filled in some holes in my Japanese understanding of things.
Found a couple more books for my 301 paper.
I need to find a few more.

I'm looking into PSYC 432 at AU.
Psychology and the Built Environment.
I'll continue to pursue courses that build on the understanding of people and spaces.
A greater understanding of the interaction with space will lead to a greater ability to mold space to meet the needs of interaction.

Form follows function?
Function follows form?
Philosophy lends itself to loss of time.
Without time one gains a sense of understanding and exploration.
Returning from mental absorption places one with the realities of the physical world.
The kitten has made a mess, and I need to vacuum it up!

The women return tomorrow and I am excited to have the guidance of Kar' again.
She is always staying focused on the tasks at hand.

I wish that reading week was longer.
Perhaps living in a white tower might solve a few problems.
{laughs inside}

I must rest and get the house looking nice in the morning.

Tomorrow I will sit at my desk {for the first time} and start to write my annotated bibliography.
I'll also complete my storyboard.
Perhaps I'll even find a moment to work on the art piece that I've had gnawing at my mind.

We can always think beyond how we can actually live.

Zeds.

Too Late

Well.
It's the first time in a while that I've dedicated myself to recording a song.
I feel that with some polish and a bit of time I'll get it together.
I'm starting to understand how to present the story visually.
The last verse just didn't seem right, until I reworked the lyrics tonight.
I took time to gather images for the storyboard that I have to hand in for class.
I just have to get the pieces together now.
The song is titled "Credence."
Accepting the truth.
It's a story about finding yourself through the juxtaposition of character.
I still need to find the third thread in the visual story line, to tie it all together.

SD core team meeting was epic.
Too long.
I didn't get home till way too late.
Shot textures earlier in the day and managed to get a few solid shots.
We need to reshoot a couple things on Thursday.
We didn't have a solar panel today and the rundle stone wasn't wet.
When the stone is sealed it will be much darker than it is dry.
A brush and some water will recreate the look in the meantime.

I have to go to the library tomorrow and iron out a couple of other things in my life.

The kitten is asleep on my arm, and is beyond adorable.
It's time to crease the sheets.

Tired

Took some photos for SD today.
Made some desktop images of Alberta grass.
I'm planning on using the grass in pigment creation.

Worked on music today.
Some Dr. Rex and an acoustic track.
Having a tough time story boarding the acoustic track.
I have to commit to a concept and just for it.

The women left for Vegas today.
I'm home alone.

I'm tired.

A Long Way Gone

Reading about the struggles of the world makes a person realize how lucky they are.
Children of War.
Ishmael Beah has quite the story.

Issue #82:
Endgame Strategies
Spent some time, relaxing with Kar', reading editorials and articles.
I'm very interested in getting something into print.
Kar' freaked at one editorial comment; I hope that she retorts.

MADT Fest is coming!
Apparently, I have an installation in the show.
I'm stoked on the idea.
I'll have to iron out the details with Tindale, but it's going to be fun.
I've also started looking into a grant application for 2010.
Media Arts.

Tomorrow is storyboard day.
Get the music video audio track recorded, and laid out visually.
Research schools and plan the pre-college shoot.

Bought a new book yesterday that I'll use as a support in my 301 paper.
The book breaks down a few key points in understanding a space.
I'm planning to analyze the "classroom."

I was also lucky enough to get a book for Valentine's Day.
My first Kimberly Elam publication.

I've started to look at books by the publishing company.
Scan the bookshelf for publishing logos, rather than titles and authors first.

I'm not a big fan of the print quality on the home machine.
I'm going to have to go out of house to get a print done for the FYS show.
The First Year Studies show....
Paul Robert has made submission easy.
Robert is pronounced in the French style.
A wonderful instructor.

I hope that I make some major headway in my work tomorrow.

Bed.

Finally a Day Off!

Tomorrow is my holiday from busy.
I am super excited to spend some quality time with Kara.

Today was great.
Sonic Branding workshop with AudioBrain.
Audrey Arbeeny and Curtis Macdonald.
It was nice to refocus on audio.

SD meeting at lunch.
Stuff is coming along.
Great ideas and big opportunities.
I've started developing the proposal for a painting for the house.
Chris Cran suggested rabbit skin glue as a pigment holder.
Made me think a little bit.

Reading week.
Busy on a new level.
Time to have extreme focus, and get ahead.
Up early and staying to task.

I'll be back and keeping well updated on Sunday.

PD patch creation.
Audio Examples for team branding selection.
Texture documentation.
Story-boarding.
Song Recording.
Maybe, I'll even make it out for a run.

Let quality time begin.

Thursday, February 12, 2009

"It's bedtime Andrew."

So, I have to find a moment during the middle of the day that I can start working on the blog.
Busy.

Had a meeting with Bonnie Murdoch about Pre College promotion for ACAD.
I'll be putting together a video package to promote enrollment.
Class Assignment.
316.

Let's hope that the school can get it's act together and get students to do the design work for the print promotionals.... yet to be seen.

Boardroom Meeting for information on Solar Decathlon.
March 3rd.
We have the room from 11:30 to 14:00.
Hopefully we can get a group interested to pen it into their calendars.

Holy Crap!!!!
Printer miscommunication.
26 of what we ordered 5 of and none of what we ordered 50 of.
Quote was 320ish and charge was 840ish.
I can't even believe it.
We had someone pick it up who didn't know what to check for and what to pay....
an errand runner.
Now we've returned things and will be dealing with the matter tomorrow.
Epic Fail.
Epic.
I have faith that all will rectify itself though, and that we'll develop a stronger and more professional working relationship with the print house.

Finally got my FYS email up and running.

firstyear@acadsa.ca

Now to get more FYs to get involved in participating in things.
There are a few who are already making a big difference, and I am glad to see it.

Tomorrow is another big day.
Audio branding workshop.
I've been looking forward to this since I first heard word of it.

Saturday I finally get a day off;
Excitement beyond words.

Sheets and Zs

Stay up all night waiting?!?

Are you crazy....
I need to get to bed with the love of my life.

Crazy busy.

Poster for SD call is designed and in the process of being priced.

I'm banished from writing more as I have stayed up past my marriage curfew.
I just got hit for writing that.

I wish I had more time in the day, or super powers to go through email, like jim carrey had in that movie with morgan freeman.

Anyways....

Making Progress

I feel like I am truly starting to make some progress in my development.
It feels awesome.
Now I just need some sleep.
Sleep.
I owe a lot of writing, but am a bit busy to keep up.

SLC meeting.
Productive.

316.
Productive.
Good feedback from the class.
I have a great opportunity to refine my work and make it hit the level where it should be.
I'm starting to appreciate Kurtis' approach to instructing more and more.
The assignment turned out to be great.
Silly me!

Oh ya....
David McCallum was our guest instructor in 315 yesterday.
Awesome stuff!
I'm stoked to get back into the boxes and lines experience.

Tomorrow is meeting heavy and giving an artist talk.
I'm still ironing that out and I have to do the dishes.

I'm excited for some time on the beach with my bass....

....whenever that happens.

I'll take my new book to class tomorrow.
Joy!

Time Management

Holy Crap!

I still have 8 applications to review.
The people who have a shot at the job take awhile to evaluate.
I need less to be good prospects.... less time.

I spent too much time working on the website mockup for the Solar Decathlon.
Looks good though.

I have to get the rest of my Vid project done too.
Egad!

I'm just finishing one of my readings and will write my review before class tomorrow.

I have to improve my time management.
I will.

Class performance tomorrow in 315.
I'm pumped.
I'm taking my keyboard controller with me.
I've got some plans.
My piece is to be intuitive collaboration.
One person shall bring the feel and then others will join.
Hopefully we can read each other and know how to contribute appropriately.

I have to jet.
By this end of this week I promise I'll get my shit together.
Promise.

Missed a Blog

Missed yesterday.
It was:
3d modeling quiz from hell.
super learn session.
a person gets a lot out of having the ego crushed.

lattes are good.

model moving.
cleaning up audio.
sound soap.
I'll get my vid piece finished for sure.

Today is busy, so I'll be back on later.

Pregger Bellie Showing

Rhino Homework.
Office layout looks pretty solid.
Added some lighting for proper workspace environment.
Could have gone more detailed.
I find office arrangement with 3d modeling is an excellent exercise.
I am very interested in designing spaces and have now found an excellent tool for visual spacial arrangement.
Watch housing with neat.
V-Block was a good exercise in little skills.
I need to buy Rhino.
Doing the work at home will be way better.
I find having to be at the school kills me.
There are No Plants!
The lighting is drab.
Most of it looks like a prison.
Senini says it's actually a modular design used for prisons.

Photo Shoot.
Mitch happened to be there.
Helped set the lighting.
I had fun.
Strobes are cool.
Captured my scruffy face.
Kim Vincent was shooting.

Had a good talk with Rick++
Showed him some of my music technique.
Got some tracks off him for tooling.
The chat pertained to learning styles and the system's cracks.
Fifth Floor Garden.
He thinks I should make it happen.

Work.

The lady is looking pregnant in the belly.

Looked through a RotoVision publication.
Graphic Japan from woodblock and zen to manga and kawaii
natalie avella
Great inspiration.
Certain styles are not my taste at all, but some elements of the culture are so....
exactly my aesthetic.
Great inspiration.
Looked at the stack of books to go through.
I'll make a nice little collection of notes yet.

47 application reviews to fill out yet.
Skimmed some and have thought about how to hit the stack.
Tomorrow and the next day.... Boom Done.
I have to get a bit of PD together for Monday.
Tuesday is package and present in for Video.
Wed. is artist talk.
Have to tighten up my presentation.

I'm stoked for the 23rd.

Bed

Thursday, February 5, 2009

bedtime was an hour ago

I wish I could write more but I've been hella busy today.
bedtime was an hour ago.
tomorrow I'll sneak in a few to fill in the blanks.

Feeling Better

Made some progress on a track with a homeboy.
Spent some time working on another with another cat;
explained how to use Propellerhead's Recycle.
Sampled Spektor Prisoners.

Got my consent form in the mail.
Signed and Witnessed.
Surgery will be in the works soon.
-Open Reduction Internal Fixation Left Clavicle
-Bone Graft Harvesting Left Clavicle

One more 9 for the MADT deck.
Sending it out tonight.

Took some self portraits this morning.
Thought inspiring.
I'm starting to get the old wheels turning in the brain.

Perhaps, I was a little too harsh yesterday.
The assignment has room for improvement, but will be alright.

SD is starting to come along.

Sound and Lighting

First off:
I am having a horrible time with our present assignment in video.
I don't agree with the concept at all.
I really wished that we'd had the chance to explore the idea of history and identity individually.
Having to tie in the footage that we have is frustrating.
Perhaps I'll dig out my old iHuman footage and bring it into the equation.
likely not to happen.
I just know that there are better uses of my time than the direction I've been given.
Argh!

Anyways:
I'm feeling better than I did yesterday evening, and hope that the morning will treat me well.

Made it to school late, as I needed extra rest for my immune system.
Had a go over noise reduction with Stu on the 5th floor.

At lunch I made some music while showing Damian my uses of audio software.
I, actually, am pretty stoked on the beginnings I created.
I wish I had more time to focus on my craft within the context of class.

Lighting workshop with Mitch.
Analyzed composition.
Image compression.
Long versus Short Lens.
For the time it took to go over what we went over, it was pretty brutal.
Felt very, "seat of your pants" style.
There could have been a lot more progress made, but it all depends on your starting point.
bell curve.
stupid bell curve.
Watched some films and had Kurtis break a few things down.
Interesting observation in Wes Anderson's use of shifted balance for introduction of entering elements.
Astute observation actually.
Prospero's Books by Greenaway.
Brutal!
"Show them high art and they get tongue tied," said Mitch.
I didn't want to shout out.
"Brutal! Turn it off."
Just because something had a lot of money go into it doesn't mean it was a success....
(insert list of crappy movies here)
....maybe it was my head's compression from the illness that had me agitated, but it sucked.
Shakespeare is so often done, horribly.

Practiced bass for the first time in awhile.
Felt good.

Bed time.
Have to kick this sickness.

Where was Class?

Strange day for 315.
Where was it?

Watched Michael Landy talk about his work in 301.
Jean-Sébastien Marcoux.
Divesting Oneself.
Identity and Reflection.

Meeting about SD posters....
couldn't concentrate....
too sick.
went home and got into bed.

Watched Seinfeld.
Watched Helvetica....
both the movie and all the extras.
Great Show.
It reminded me of how I decided to go to school for design.
Got excited and sad all at once.

Head has been pounding.

I need to do some reading.
Take some notes and get my annotated bibliography started.

Must shake illness and get focus back.

Sleep.

Online Collaboration

Baby Carrying Class.
Informative.
We have bought a wrap and will opt out of getting a stroller.
Lifestyle Choice.
Now that we know how the wrap works and how's it's made....
it's all about getting fabric.
I'm sure we'll end up with a nice selection to match our clothing.

Something went wrong in my neck last night.
I've been so sore all day.
Illness and physical pain, in combination, suck.

How the Fork Got Its Tines.
Henry Petroski.
Looking at everyday object with a new view is always enriching.
The history of our material culture is quite fascinating for me.

Supper Bowl.
Fell asleep on the couch and woke up to the anthem.
Best rendition of the American tune I've heard in a long time.
The game had its moments, while I worked on music for class.
collaboration for MADT 315
to remix sounds for the class project.
I am a huge fan of digital manipulation of analog sounds to create glitch drip.
Uploading new tracks for the mix right now.

I keep trying to start Helvetica, but find I don't have the time yet.
Perhaps tomorrow.

I have to finish the uploads and then hit the sack.
I'm tired.
